The Ascension of the Lord
May 24, 2009

Here are a few reminders from the Pastoral Council about what should and should not be happening while we are attending mass. Most of this is pretty obvious stuff, but it is always good to be reminded of these things now and then.

The Communion fastThose receiving communion must fast from food and liquids other than water or medicine for a period of one hour prior to communion. This is not a hard fast to follow, but it does mean perhaps making a small sacrifice for the Lord.

When to leaveFather is supposed to be the first person out the door! Sometimes ushers and those manning tables in the vestibule must leave early, as well as some others who have a legitimate reason, so we must never judge, but if I habitually leave church after communion or before the priest, I should reflect on the fact that this encourages others to follow this bad example, and is not pleasing to God! Why come to church and then insult the Lord on the way out?

Talking in church before mass beginsThe time before Mass is meant to be a time of spiritual preparation. If I have a need to say something to my neighbor, I should do so in a low tone of voice. Others around me are trying to pray.

Hats: It is impolite and irreverent for men and boys to wear baseball caps in church. You wouldn't think this would have to be said, but the pastoral council assures me this happens on a regular basis.

GumObviously, gum and other food, other than baby food should not be brought in church. Someone chewing gum will not be given communion!

GesturesDo I make the sign of the cross slowly and meaningfully? Do I listen during the readings? Do I sing or pray after communion? Or am I watching the "fashion show" of people in line? Where I place my eyes during mass is very important!

Attire: What I wear to church should not be in any way overly distracting or provocative! Try to wear something better than normal. Enough said.
