LOVE NEVER FAILS

Today's second reading from 1 Corinthians 13 is used at nearly every wedding I officiate at, and with good reason. The point that St. Paul drives home over and over is that love in God's eyes is not what we feel, but what we do. Christ's love for us was demonstrated, not by feelings, but by his actions: he went to his death for us. In this way, Christ acted lovingly even toward those he disliked (like some of the Pharisees), St. Paul gives us a little checklist to help us to discern just how "loving" my actions are in a given situation. This is what determines a true success story at the end of life: the extent of our love.
Father Gary
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love is not jealous
Love does not put on airs
Love is not rude
Love does not seek its own interests
Love is not quick tempered
Love does not brood over injuries
Love does not rejoice over other people's sins
But rejoices with the truth
Love bears all things
Love does not come to an end
So there are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these ..... is love.
