21st Sunday Ordinary Time
August 26, 2007
Almost everyone is interested in getting a peek at the future, and in this Sunday's gospel (Luke 13:22-30), Jesus gives us one. Here are a few of the points you won't want to forget:
- Jesus lets us know in no uncertain terms that many of those who are considered first in this world very likely won't be in the next one. Want to start "getting ahead" in the world to come? Then never lose an opportunity to seek out and practice humility. Don't be afraid to take on humble, unnoticed tasks for others, and don't always expect to be thanked, recognized, or rewarded. Jesus notices, and his reward is forever. That's all that matters.
- There will come a time when it will be too late to enter Christ's kingdom. The time to enter is when the door of mercy is still open (i.e., while we are still alive!). Remember, after death it is too late to convert, too late to go to confession, too late to begin to have a relationship with Christ, for by then the door will be closed.
- The gate through which we pass into heaven is a narrow one. Jesus advises us to use our time on earth well. None of our possessions will fit through the gate, so we cannot become too attached to them. Our sins won't fit through either! We must let Him wash them away, and he will, if only we sincerely ask him to, and especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
